Drastic measures

I just had to delete the last 2,000 users, so there are now approximately 1,500 users of this site, most of which are still spam.

All of the content is permanently removed, of course. Account creation is now at the discretion of administrators.

Site improvements

If you're eagle eyed you have probably spotted these already, but just so you know, I've been doing some work on the site lately. That's to say, I've been slaving away just a bit more than usual on my unpaid upkeep job (← wink wink, nudge nudge).

For starters, if you look above the text you are reading right now (no, not that far, bit lower, up a little, that's it!), you'll see a tick box titled "Follow this post". Clicking it will gain you notifications of comments on the relevant post (this one, in this case), regardless of whether or not you have commented yourself. Or, if you are the author of a post or a comment on a particular post and are tired of the notifs, un-ticking the box will fix that for you. So, please do not comment solely in order to retrieve notifications, because that is no point and only serves to fill the database with junk.

Another thing that I've implemented on both the stream and site in general is sarcastic text. Rather than using a separate font to render the reverse italics (i.e. Arial Sarcastic), I'm achieving it with pure CSS. Use the element inspector / Firebug if you really want to know how it works. All you need to know is that to write sarcastic text, do it like this: \sarcasm\.

On the Bans system, it is now possible to mark bans as "unbanned". Just click "edit" on the post (assuming you have permission), and tick the appropriate box. It will still show up on the main list, but with a bold, white "U" icon. It will also have an Amazon-style message when viewed, warning that the ban is no longer effective.

Hope you're enjoying the shiz! Big Grin

New automatic aliasing

Just a little note: me and Mal have just configured Drupal to automatically alias posts from the boring old /node/x format to things like /blog/author/title and /forum/subforum/title. It also applies to posts made before this change, but /node links still work.

MC1 Downtime - now fixed.

News flash for owners: Java was in fact upgraded. There was apparently an issue with the older version.

As of 21:31 UTC 1 July 2012, MC1 is now operating as normal. Woo!

The down time therefore had a duration of twenty hours. An official MC1 spokesman has issued his deepest condolences and apologises sincerely for any inconvenience caused.

If you are not an Owner:

Please wait patiently for this issue to be fixed.

If you are an Owner:

There is a CPU usage issue with the MC1 bukkit configuration, whereby java consumes 100% CPU (multiple threads), with no users connected. This requires an immediate halt to its service until someone fixes it.

It is up to you (Banana937, MalHT etc.) to fix this issue by narrowing it down to a plugin / version or whatever the problem is. In its current state, it is simply unacceptable (the power usage for one thing).

I noticed the fault about an hour ago; that might help.

By the way, the start.sh file has an exit command edited in (by me), until this is solved.

New Slate

As Kieraan has betrayed all Arcator staff and attempted to bring Arcator down, by deleting files amongst other stuff, we will be starting again soon with a completely new world.

Sorry about this folks, and many apologies for Kieran's behaviour. He deleted all Minecraft backups so there is no possibility of a restore of the world. It's gone.

Here's the culprit, Mr. Kieran Breeze:

And here's his new home:

MC1 + SixteenNet downtime

Hello,

We apologize if you were in any way affected by the 12.5 hour long downtime period, starting from 2011-10-17, 1930 Hours UTC, ending at 2011-10-18, 0800 Hours UTC, and affecting the servers and infrastructure supporting MC1 and other SixteenNet services (including IRC and this website).

The downtime was caused by a power cut at the premises, due to a power-junction box exploding in the immediate neighbourhood.

As a move that would support communication if another of these events were to occur, and would further decentralize the network, I am considering moving the IRC network to a public IRC server such as freenode.net. Delegating responsibility of individual services to third parties could be beneficial in terms of stability.
