Note on Downtime

A New Era for Arcator

Arcator has been a (mostly) successful Minecraft server network in some form or another since late 2010. That's more than six years. Not many can claim that kind of experience. What we have is valuable.

That experience enabled me, last year, to work with some of the top startups in Shoreditch, London as a community management consultant. I charged lucrative rates, allowing me to become very rich. I have mostly squandered my wealth on overpriced luxuries like rare CS:GO knives and a used Happy Hacking Keyboard. But I now have at my disposal an entire state-of-the-art server farm.

I am going to use this to host new Arcator servers. 93 of them! You should see Arcator servers MC8 through MC100 come online in the coming days, offering all sorts of new gamemodes including adventure maps and all the popular modpacks such as Tekkit and FtB. This network will rival the biggest players in the game.

But that's not all: now, anyone will be able to host an Arcator server. For just £4.20 per month, you can fire up an automatically configured instance of an Arcator server with up to 1TB disk space, 3GB of RAM and as much processing power as can be allocated. This is called a FabricaBox.

Fela is currently in a major Asian country, sourcing investors. We reckon this is going to be huge, as the average Minecraft player nowadays has just tons of disposable income.

So, come and play with us!

April fools!

That stuff about making tons of money off Arcator isn't true, nor is the spin your own server stuff or MC100. The Arcator main server seems to be down right now, for unknown reasons, so please hold tight. Discord and some MC servers are still up.

What would you like to see from a new Arcator.co.uk?

Update by Curtis:

We have decided to make a v2 of this website, We are currently making the list of resources we need on the new website. If you would like to add something to the list please post it in the comments of this post.

Hello everyone. There is a good chance that we're on the brink of another Arcator Revival, having got RestitutorOrbis and cindercrow7 on the case. They have already got the server updated to Minecraft 1.8.7.

This website, arcator.co.uk, runs on Drupal version 6. It has approached the end of its life, - I wouldn't expect it to be around for more than a year - meaning that continuing to run it will be a security risk. Updating a Drupal site to a new version can be painful even with a simple site, and we have a lot of custom code running here that doesn't necessarily make use of Drupal's module system properly. I wouldn't expect any of it to work properly on Drupal 7 or 8 without some heavy rewriting, which I'm not sure would be worth the time or effort (and I'm not sure I could really provide either).

So that means my plan is to save all the pages on this site and its other sections (Stream, Quotes, Wiki) and host them as a static archive (think Wayback Machine - archive.arcator.co.uk) for future reference, and put together a new Drupal site.

I'm interested in not only providing a site for information about Arcator and Minecraft, but making a place for Arcator's long time members and community to talk about other games and interests. That could mean - along with a new Stream and server status updates section - having a better forum or maybe a Reddit-style subcommunity system going. A lot is possible. What do you want out of this site?

A little reminder about the spirit of Arcator

Arcator was founded on fun and pissing around. I don't think anyone who was there on the first day thought that the server would still be up and have any kind of playerbase in 2014, and it's down to everyone who's stayed and played that we've kept out so long and are currently down a shaky path of revival.

Everyone seems to be taking this revival business extremely seriously and the endless arguments over staffing and how we're not doing enough advertising are wearing me out. Can we just try and do the best we can? We don't have to be the most popular Minecraft server ever and in fact becoming such a server would go against our ideals of a close-knit community. By all means we should be attracting new players, but let's try and keep them too. A server that is focused only on growing its playerbase isn't going to be fun, it's going to be a server focused on endless work.

We came out of the joe.to servers because while they were great fun they could also be very big places where the average player felt anonymous and struggled to get recognised by the staff. Big servers do very well, but we don't have do be one of them to succeed in being a fun place.

I don't even know what I'm really trying to say, I think the current shitstorm over two players being banned etc. is a symptom of the general attitude that what we have here at Arcator already doesn't matter, and we're losing hold of the things that make the server what it is.

TL;DR let's get loads of new players but also stop tearing our hair out over it and appreciate the ones we do get

PS: also I heard people wanted dank memes. top kek mates i just injected 9 marijuanas #mokesweed #gamergate

Staff

The staff list is now up to date and Staff Applications are open for the time being for those who feel able to take on a staff position. You do seriously need to be up for the job though; we'll be demoting people who don't do their duties.

http://arcator.co.uk/apply/

I'm open to suggestions for swapping players around on that list.

Who wants to run an Arcator server?

I've heard from a few people who want to run servers as Arcator ones. Drop a comment with what you can offer if you want to host one (e.g. what's your server setup, internet etc. like and what kind of server you specifically want to run) and PM me the IP/dynamic DNS.

Yeah that's right we're back

Server back up as the CPU's been replaced. It's a better CPU too! A Pentium in fact, wow - such TECHNOLOGY.

THE BUG IS BACK

UPDATE 3: ONLINE again! Woop!

UPDATE 2: OFFLINE. Sorry m8s, we can't run until we fix this issue.

UPDATE: The server is back up although the problem remains unsolved. We've sent off for a new, slightly better CPU as it's basically the only possible thing left that could be wrong. Anyway, let's hope that the Gods of the CPU Cache let us play Minecraft until then. IF THE SERVER CRASHES WITH A SERVER CLOSED MESSAGE THEN PLEASE MAKE A CLEAR POST ON STREAM. Thanks.

Sorry, the bug is back and the server's gonna have to go down again. I will hopefully be able to replace the motherboard tomorrow, which hopefully will fix our problems.

1.8 Server Issues

The SixteenNet server was suffering serious configuration issues and these prevented Arcator from running. The server is now BACK UP.

Bear with me on this. It might take a while to fix, as it'll be dependent on me and Fela troubleshooting it while he also deals with his university workload.

UPDATE: Me and Fela have spent the day investigating the issue... it doesn't seem to be hardware. Something's very wrong it would seem.

UPDATE 2: Nah, we were right the first time, it is a hardware problem. We swapped the RAM to no effect, so there isn't a short term fix.
